Walter Massey, Ph.D.
Dr. Massey currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors for the GMTO Corporation, the international nonprofit organization leading the construction of the Giant Magellan Telescope. He is also Senior Advisor to the President of the University of Chicago.
Dr. Massey’s distinguished career includes serving as Director of the National Science Foundation and Director of Argonne National Laboratory. He is President Emeritus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Morehouse College, and he previously held the position of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of California system.
A renowned theoretical physicist, Dr. Massey is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Council on Foreign Relations. His contributions to science and education have been recognized with more than 40 honorary degrees from prestigious institutions including Harvard, Yale, Northwestern University, Amherst, Brown, and the New York University. Among his many honors, he received the Vannevar Bush Award from the National Science Board and the Gold Key Award from the Society of Sigma Xi.
